New Addams Family Series (Remake)
A downloadable game
The Game:
This is a remake (or port) of the game The New Addams Family Series.
It was released in 2002 for the Game Boy Color (+GBA) and was published by Microïds and developed by 7th Sense.
It's an adventure game with a bit of a detective / mystery and slight horror narrative.
trivia: this was also one of the three games on GBC that utilizes the system’s ‘Hi-Color’ mode, where manipulating palette registers could allow for as many as 2000 colors to be displayed onscreen at once. The other game are the GBC port of Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare and The Fish Files.
Intro:
The New Addams Family Series is an adventure game starring the two young Addams children Pugsley and Wednesday.
The family mansion is going to be demolished and replaced by an amusement park by their neighbour, and therefore the family will be evicted.
While the adults are trying to find a solution, Pugsley and Wednesday roam the house helping out in their own peculiar way.
Only if they find the three estate ownership documents the contractors can be stopped.
Pugsley and Wednesday will as in any traditional adventure game collect items, solve puzzles and communicate with the rest of the family.
Comparison:
a rough comparison between the original GBC version and the remake:
original version | remake |
---|---|
original keyboard interface | true 'point and click' mouse interface (simple two-click interface: left is action, right is look or put item back in inventory) |
original music tracks (6) | original music tracks (6) plus a complete new, modern set of music tracks (42) |
speech bar at the bottom of the screen with an animated portrait and some lines of text (slightly Sierra portrait style) | characters themself are animated while speaking, with text shown above the character's head (lucasarts style) |
original sfx | new plus additional sfx |
1 saveslot | unlimited saveslots |
inventory must be opened via a key | inventory is always shown on screen, below game area |
very small inventory items | bigger inventory items |
contains several arcade-ish action minigames | omitted the arcade-ish action minigames (as they get annoying quite quickly and also kinda ruin the relax adventuring-pace the player might be experiencing) |
exits have no visible onscreen marker | area exits are accompanied by an animated arrow when hovering over the correct area. |
original amount of animations | more animations |
original menu screens | new modern main menu and in-game menu screens |
smaller walkable areas are bigger in every room/scene/area | walkable areas are bigger in every room/scene/area which gives a bit more freedom of movement |
